I’ve always found seed saving to be a very romantic idea. One invoking dusty jars half way full of satiny seeds of different shades and sizes - maybe even of a grandmother passing one of those jars to her grand daughter as she departs for life in a distant country... sigh! The beauty behind the sustainability, resourcefulness, and independence in seed saving is just as compelling to me. There are many reasons why you might want to start seed saving. Saving seeds encourages the continuation of ecological diversification by keeping heritage and rare breeds from being wiped out. Saving and replanting seed is to engage in the cycle of life and the idea that doing so can now be seen as a controversial activity is more than just a little unnerving. Making A Cheeseboard Out of Salvaged Wood

One man's trash is another man's cheeseboard.
In our household I’m notorious for a few things, one of which is bringing home stuff I find on the street. Among many other things, we’ve salvaged a couch-side table, a TV stand, a bookshelf, a shoe rack, porcelain plates and now a new cheeseboard! Well, new to us at least. The best part of this story is that it all happened two days before Sweetbreads’ birthday (which is today, happy birthday darling, I love you!).

Saturday morning I was in a classic guy situation: two days pre-birthday, no concept of what to get her and hoping for a miracle to happen. At 8am on my walk to the farmer’s market such a miracle did happen. Strolling down the street I saw what appeared to be a nasty, old, rotted out piece of wood on the ground. However, I’m always on the prowl for new stuff, especially when I’m alone, and this particular piece of wood caught my attention. Despite it’s seemingly useless condition a few things struck me as odd.

What's Little Seed All About?

We’ve received a number of questions recently about our vision for the farm and what we want to produce. It’s a difficult question to answer, but it’s important to share some of our thoughts as we get started.
 
We know that we want to focus on grass-based meat and cheese production, but we don’t have land yet, so we can’t be sure exactly which types of meat and cheese until we settle down. As noted on our Core Values page, a fundamental aspect of our farming endeavor is to work with nature and follow its lead. Location, weather patterns, topography, soil conditions and many other factors will help us determine what to farm. On top of that, we have never farmed before, so we don’t know which aspects we’ll enjoy (or not enjoy) the most. Part of our transition is based on improving our quality of life and pursuing challenges and achieving goals that are rewarding to us and our community. Our own passions will be a driving force in the decision-making process.
